Mike Saylor has been involved in boating for over 40 years.
As an avocation, he has been a delivery skipper in power and sailboats, has expertise in piloting and celestial navigation and has taught these subjects as well as utilized them. Mike has conducted seminars in rough weather boating (a subject he is uniquely qualified to discuss having experienced several hurricanes and more actual hurricane, storm and gale force conditions). He also lectures and conducts seminars on electronic navigation, and radar and has taught Marline Spike Seamanship.
After retiring as an executive from the computer industry, Mike worked for quite a few years at West Marine. He has not been a captain since concluding, years ago, that delivering boats was beginning to feel more like work than fun. He now writes a regular monthly column for Soundings called, “Know How”.
