At last, a handheld navigation and chartplotter tool that really makes sense. Garmin’s iQue 3600 is a PDA with a GPS built right in. It runs on the Palm OS 5 operating system, and can therefore run all Palm programs. It’s also an MP3 player, with voice recording and the ability to both give and receive commands. It comes with a CD of road maps for all of North America, so you can keep it in your car and have it (verbally) guide you to your destination. But for navigators, all that is only the beginning.
When you team up the iQue 3600 with Fugawi 3 GPS Mapping Software, you have a handheld, full-featured chart plotter with an internal 12-channel, WAAS-enabled GPS that will run just about any kind of electronic chart — Garmin Blue Charts on CD-ROM, and also Maptech, Softchart, and USGS DRG topos. The Fugawi GPS software has all the features we expect in a navigation program, with programmable waypoints, routes, and navigation functions. And since the iQue 3600 has both RS232 and USB ports, you can upload and download waypoints from another GPS and charts from your PC. Internal storage capacity is 32 MB, expandable to 500MB. This is a truly awesome device!
